Danny Tanner was a single dad, who lost his young wife in an accident, leaving behind three young girls in his care. And so with the help of his two other best friends, they try to figure out how to raise these kids. While simultaneously proving that a sitcom doesn’t need to have vulgar content or crude language to be a super hit among the masses! Serious moments sandwiched between sentimental and downright comical ones, the character of Danny Tanner was brought alive by Bob Saget (until he passed away at 65). He taught his on-screen daughters (and us) that we need to be true to ourselves and to our value systems, irrespective of what the world says. No wonder, this was one of the shows that got a bit of a makeover as it made a comeback to prime time. Dre Johnson
TV Show: Black-ish
One should always remember their roots but also learn to adjust to the times they are living in. Well, at least that’s what Dre and Bow were trying to do with their five children while being a part of a dominant white neighborhood. As a prosperous young African-American couple, they did their best to set a positive example for their kids while trying to maintain a decent balance between home life and work. And also navigating the tricky identity crisis that’s enveloped modern America. As a Black American dad, Dre has mostly been successful in his pursuit. Though he did struggle often to communicate effectively with his children always ensured that his kids understood the meaning and importance of their cultural heritage and learn to balance it with current trends in society as well. However, hilarity ensues when he is caught in a bind – between his parents, who have certain ideas about how young kids should be raised, and his own kids’ considerably more modern approach towards parenting. Add Anthony Anderson’s perfect comic timing and you have one heck of a show that serves as a terrific de-stressor, making Dre one of our favorite TV dads that we never missed on TV!
Phil Dunphy
TV Show: Modern Family
The kind of dad that everyone wanted – not because he was one of the most successful blokes you knew. Or one of the sharpest one because frankly he wasn’t and was kind enough to accept that. But if you were looking for some fresh-off-the-boat kind of advice that was both goofy and cool, then this is what Phil Dunphy, played by Ty Burrell offered you. Especially with Claire already domineering the parental ride, Phil provided a great balance for the kids (and even the adults at times!) Bringing some of primetime TV’s funniest yet truly touching moments, he was the unbiased, prejudice-free dad that taught us just so much and we loved him for the way he was! Despite his goofy quirks, he taught us to see the lighter side of life while inculcating white American humor in every situation.
Homer Simpson
TV Show: The Simpsons
How can we miss Homer Simpson from the list of our favorite TV dads? While he was not exactly great at parenting or with money (or with anything in general) but all his wacky ideas were well-intentioned. And he was still the kind of father figure that we would have loved, no matter what! A well-meaning dad, who was genuinely endearing and downright funny, without even a hint of malice, this was the kind we wanted around. And 32 seasons later, we are more than happy to find him on our screens, lightning it up with his amusing antics.
